Principle and operation of ETS TOEFL

The ETS TOEFL is the reference among existing English exams. This test for students is a passport that is often indispensable for entering an English-speaking university. It is therefore important to understand how it works and to follow a specific preparation for the proposed tests.

What is the ETS TOEFL?

The ETS TOEFL refers to the private U.S. Education Testing Service (ETS) organization that conducts the test. Based at Princeton University, this organization offers standardized language tests whose value is recognized internationally. The term ETS TOEFL is therefore used to refer to one of the tests developed by the organization, the Test of English as a Foreign Language. Created in 1964, this academic test is regularly requested by British, American and Canadian universities from foreign candidates.

Since its creation, the ETS TOEFL has been offered in different forms, with a paper version and a computer version. Since 2005, the Internet format, the TOEFL iBT (internet-Based Test), in four parts and scored out of 120 points, is the new version submitted to candidates during the official examination. To date, it is estimated that more than 30 million people worldwide have already taken the test.
