TOEFL: scoring grid and maximum score
The TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) is one of the most internationally recognized English exams. It assesses your skills according to a special grading system that includes reading and listening comprehension. The test can be prepared by attending courses at Wall Street English centres in Switzerland.
The TOEFL iBT (internet-Based Test) is used to determine your level of English from a university perspective, especially for entry into English-speaking schools. Recognized worldwide, the exam consists of four separate tests.
The Reading section is marked out of 30 points. It lasts between 60 and 80 minutes and determines your reading skills and knowledge of vocabulary around three to four academic texts.
The Listening test is also marked out of 30 points. The Listening test consists of listening to audio excerpts from conversations in English and answering questions about them. It lasts approximately 60-90 minutes.
Writing is judged during a third 50-minute test, which is marked out of 30 points. This section consists of two parts: the first consists of answering a question about a text and a dialogue on the same subject, the second is an argument to be provided on the basis of a given question.
Finally, TOEFL includes a section dedicated to Speaking, this time not exceeding 20 minutes. Again, this results in a score of 30 points. You will have to answer 6 questions by recording yourself with a microphone. In each of these tests, reaching a score of 22 points is considered a good result.
The maximum TOEFL score
In the end, the maximum TOEFL score is 120 points. As the maximum score for each section is 30 points, the best possible score must be obtained in all the different tests.
